More than 180 young people from all seven provinces of Nepal will gather in Kathmandu from 14–16 August 2026 for the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Nepal 2026, a national youth climate platform aimed at strengthening meaningful youth participation in climate action and decision-making.

The event is organised by Nepalese Youth for Climate Action (NYCA) and Youth Action for Sustainable and Eco Nepal (YASEN), with endorsement from YOUNGO, the official children and youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

LCOY Nepal 2026 will provide a platform for young people to:

  • Share experiences
  • Build knowledge
  • Develop policy recommendations
  • Connect local climate action with national and global climate processes

Theme

“Together for Climate Transparency”

Key Thematic Areas

  1. Youth and Children’s Engagement in Climate Processes
    • Meaningful youth participation in UNFCCC, COP processes and Nepal’s climate policy discussions.
  2. Loss and Damage, Climate Finance & Just Transition
    • Climate impacts, equitable access to climate finance and pathways towards a fair and sustainable transition.
  3. Changing Mountains and Livelihoods
    • Impacts of climate change on mountain ecosystems, communities, cultural heritage and livelihoods.
  4. Climate-Resilient Education & Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE)
    • Climate education, green skills and education systems that empower young people to lead climate action.
  5. Agriculture, Food Security & Nutrition
    • Resilient food systems while recognising local and Indigenous knowledge and practices.
  6. WASH & Water Security
    • Water-related climate challenges and safe, inclusive and climate-resilient WASH systems.
  7. Gender Equality, Disability & Social Inclusion (GEDSI)
    • Inclusive climate action and meaningful participation of women, persons with disabilities and marginalised communities.

Conference Activities

Participants will explore real climate challenges and develop practical recommendations.

A key outcome will be the National Children and Youth Statement on Climate Change 2026, which will consolidate young people’s priorities and recommendations and contribute to national climate policy discussions and the wider COP process.

Inclusion & Representation

LCOY Nepal 2026 will prioritise inclusive and diverse youth participation, with representation from all seven provinces and particular attention to:

  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Climate-vulnerable communities
  • Marginalised communities
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Children and youth
  • Gender equality

The organisers aim for at least 50% participation of women and gender-diverse participants.
